An old Cherokee is teaching his grandson about life.

A fight is going on inside me," he said to the boy. "It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves.

One is evil -- he is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt,

resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.

And the other is good -- he is joy, peace, love , hope, serenity, humility, kindness,

benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion, and faith.

This same fight is going on inside you -- and inside every other person, too."

The grandson thought about it for a
minute and then asked his grandfather,
"Which wolf will win?"

The old Cherokee simply replied, "The one you feed."

So when you wake up, say "Good morning Lord!" not "Good Lord! morning."

At Thanksgiving at Tom and Ann's in Virginia we talked about the Mock Apple Pie

mom made for us all last month. I couldn't believe there were no apples in it!

Here is the recipe from the Kraft Food web site.

RITZ® Mock Apple Pie

Prep Time: 45 min
Total Time:  4 hr 15 min
Serves:  10

RITZ® Mock Apple Pie

Ingredients
pastry for 2-crust 9-inch pie
36 RITZ Crackers, coarsely broken (about 1-3/4 cups crumbs)
2 cups sugar
1-3/4 cups water
2 tsp. cream of tartar
2 Tbsp. lemon juice
Grated lemon peel (1 lemon)
2 Tbsp. margarine or butter
1/2 tsp. ground cinnamon
Preparation
ROLL out half the pastry and line 9-inch pie plate. Place cracker crumbs in prepared crust; set aside.

HEAT sugar, water and cream of tartar to boil in saucepan on high heat; simmer 15 minutes. Add lemon juice and peel; cool. Pour syrup over cracker crumbs. Dot with margarine; sprinkle with cinnamon. Roll out remaining pastry; place over pie. Trim, seal and flute edges. Slit top crust to allow steam to escape.

BAKE at 425°F for 30 to 35 minutes or until crust is crisp and golden. Cool completely.

I like to make this dish every year. My family just loves it and it always goes over very well at the office parties

My Grandmother made the best real apple pies. She made this, fooled my dad and he wouldn't talk to her for a week when she told him it wasn't apple pie. ;->

Here is a letter Raf is sending to Poland, translated for us using the Polish alphabet characters:

Droga Elu, Piotrze, Marto i Iwono,

Wesołych Świąt i Szczęśliwego Nowego Roku! Ciągle jestem w szkole hotelarskiej i zdobywam dużo pożytecznej wiedzy. Lubię te zajęcia i jestem zadowolony z warunków mojego stypendium. Podczas pierwszego trymestru pracowałem w hotelu niedaleko mojej szkoły. Zajmowałem się różnymi rzeczami, byłem recepcjonistą, kelnerem, kucharzem i takie doświadczenie powinno mi się później przydać. U nas aktualnie pada śnieg i mamy go już jakieś 6 cali. W Polsce pewne też pada i jest równie zimno. Moja dziewczyna, Christina, właśnie pojechała do domu na Święto Dziękczynienia. Ona lubi swoją szkołę i radzi sobie w niej całkiem dobrze.

Jeszcze raz życzę Wam Wesołych Świąt i Szczęśliwego Nowego Roku!

Pozdrawiam serdecznie,

                                                                                                        Rafael

Trivia corner:

1)  Who knows where the Captain Marvel word SHAZAM comes from?  This is what

he said each time he turned into Captain Marvel. The winner of this radio contest to describe this

word won front row tickets to a concert featuring my favorite artist now - singer Avril Lavigne.

2) Here is a picture of the statue "The Thinker" at Columbia University.  Was this used for the

old TV show Dobie Gillis featuring Maynard G. Crebbs (the G stands for Walter, and played by

Bob Denver who later played Gilligan)?  Is this show ever on TV anymore?

(Mom and Dad gave me a smaller statue as a graduation gift a quarter century ago.)

I was there Friday to help judge the engineering student presentations of new motorcycle designs.

They are not all posted yet, but see other graphics projects from their computer lab at

the E1102 gallery at Gateway Lab:  http://poblano.cc.columbia.edu/gallery/ (When I took a post grad

course there in 1982 about how you could use computers to generate engineering drawings,

none of us dreamed we'd all be doing it in now on our home based PC's!)

After the motorcycle presentations I attended another meeting, and then cocktails and dinner.

I chatted with Leslie Robertson, who designed the world trade center's twin towers. He and I discussed

the floor trusses and the mechanical equipment room below the south tower crash floors without trusses.

(I feel the Nova TV series video describing the failure sequence is nonsense.)

The Port Authority's chief engineer was also there, but I spared him from my theories  :)

Here is my account of the motorcycle design presentations for possible publication in the alumni magazine:

The Columbia engineering students presented their innovative designs for motorcycles of the future at the Botwinick Gateway Lab on December 5, 6 and 9, 2002. They were graded according to established planning, design, project organization and marketing criteria. As one of the judges, I stated at the break that if these young gentlemen and ladies dressed in business suits are only 18 and 19 year old freshmen, I can't imagine the presentations they will give as seniors! What great communicators they were! Fellow judge vice dean Morton Friedman agreed.
A lot of their comfortable demeanor in front of the audience was due to the fact that they knew their material cold. There were virtually no weak links in the unified team statements. The computerized power point work would impress a midtown ad agency. From graphics featuring video of motorcycles sailing through the air to sound clips of "their bike versus ours," the day was lively and entertaining. The enthusiasm in every speaker's voice was contagious, and the graph charts showed mastery of the technical aspects.
Each motorcycle design was unique, from racers, to amphibious, to one that might fly. Students designed pollution free electric and hybrid models with hand and Auto-rendered sketches of each. Market research featured opinion polls and focus groups.
I honestly left there thinking about taking the written and road test so I can start riding my own motorcycle. I felt empathy with Professor Jack __________who had to grade these future engineers. In a world where there is a lot of pressure to resist grade inflation, a boatload of A's should be assigned!
PS - I later visited the Gateway Lab Gallery web site at
http://gateway.seas.columbia.edu/e1102/index.html - I recommend that readers check it out too. The motorcycle postings will be uploaded soon.

Remember that doing the assigned reading in college is like trying to drink from a fire hose.

Speaking of talented college students, congrats Raf for making the Dean's list this past term. Well done!

See you at Christmas son.
