Before Ruth, Connecticut Slugger Ruled

August 1, 2007

Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis wasn't at Detroit's Navin Field to see Babe Ruth become the major league career home run leader on July 18, 1921.

Baseball's first commissioner was more concerned with the very future of the game, so he was in Chicago for the trial stemming from the "Black Sox" scandal that had marred the 1919 World Series.

Nevertheless, there was a baseball buzz in Detroit that day - but only because Ruth's 139th homer, off Bert Cole of the Tigers, was a colossal drive that had traveled at least 500 feet.

There were no speeches or tributes recognizing Ruth as the new home run leader. That's because no one was aware that the man he surpassed - Roger Connor, a first baseman from Connecticut who had retired in 1897 - owned the record.

Connor was born July 1, 1857, in Waterbury, and he grew up there. His parents did not want him playing baseball for a living. The sport was associated with gambling and drinking; it was not respectable. They preferred that he work in a Brass City factory.

But Connor was determined to play ...

Here are the police arresting the man with the replica 1776 submarine near the Queen Mary.

Sketch of the Revolutionary War vessel Turtle.

When asked what happened to bring him too close to the Queen Mary,

he responded that he got caught up in the current.

He meant he got his 1776 vessel stuck in 2007. J

All best wishes to those involved.

Here are all the boys enjoying the nice summer weather. Our new pup is in the top picture.

Amos, my 10 year old cocker, died last month. Shire is our new standard poodle. He loves the boys.

Take care,
Anita

I liked the Paul Harvey story this week about the man who went to his bank.

The line was long, and when he finally reached the counter, the President of the bank was working there.

"The lines are rather long today" the man remarked.

"Yes" said the President. "We're looking for a teller."

"But I thought you just hired one." said the man.

"Yes" said the President. "That's the teller we are looking for."

I also liked the dinner party we attended Tuesday, where we were treated to interesting information about Winston Churchill, the Loch Ness, and two funny stories:

"I just had a dinner to die for."

"Literally, you could die from eating this meal!"

The Jewish grandmother was walking along the Miami Beach with her grandson when a scene from Exodus unfolded.  A giant wave came ashore and swept the baby out to sea.

The woman looked skyward and said "Why me? I have done nothing wrong all my life. I insist you return my grandson now!"
Another wave sprang forth, and the baby was returned to her arms.

Again she looked up and said

"He was wearing a hat you know."

Kristen had such a nice time visiting us this weekend.  And we did too!

She couldn't decide on the best part of the weekend, until she remembered coffee with my Mom and Dad and Joanne and Aunt Marion.

My favorite part was driving her back to NYC and using my new Bluetooth speaker by Motorola that attaches to the visor over my windshield. We called many people and both chatted. Then Kristen called me on her phone and the speaker became an echo chamber complete with steady feedback.  It was like a disco in my SUV. We cranked up the volume powered by my cigarette lighter, and both sang and sang in that echo chamber (for free on weekends.) I can't wait to steal Mary's cell phone and listen to myself sing in my car. For only $89, ya gotta get one.  Driving will never be the same!
