July 28,1945:

70 years ago, Mom took the morning subway train from The Bronx to her job in Manhattan, as a 16 year old.

She was working for the USO (United Service Organizations) in the Empire State Building.

She planned lunch as usual in Bryant Park behind the 42nd St library, if the fog lifted.

At 9:40 am, an airplane crashed into the 79th floor.

Mom had to walk down the stairs from the 57th floor to get out.

Here was the story:

We are so glad you made it to safety Mom !

This music school in China seems inspirational.

Congrats to Allie on her first place finish in her skating competition!

Here is our town beach this week:

See what grows there: Skye!

She also enjoyed the concert on the green at night with Peter Martin.

Because she helped move the boxes of books being sent to the children of Guatemala,

and then served me such a lovely coffee in bed, how could I resist her request for Thursday at Lake Quassy?

Before the crowds, she got 500 gallons splashed on her at Saturation Station bucket dump.

I bored her with stories of how we picnicked here as kids (with the Italian American Club) at the tables below,

which we could see from the top platform of the water slide. (See platform above right, with two white flags.)

And the tube rides from that platform were great:

Lou keeps his nephew Nick laughing in a different soaking.

Lou who never drinks calories, leads by example with water and yet a drunken, festive kinda humor.
